Ashley and Mary Ann: Thanks for your feedback. I have a freelancer friend who takes the metaphor even farther, likening herself to a vehicle manufacturer with different product lines. Some sell great. Others are niche. When certain lines tank, she redoubles production elsewhere. The metaphor works surprisingly well. Artsy-fartsy types disdain thinking of writing in these terms, but the facts speak for themselves. If you obsess over every word in every article (and do nothing else to bring in cash), you won't be able to write enough stories each month to pay the bills. It's that simple.

Excellent interview! For the last two years whenever anyone asked me what I do, I would reply, "I have my own business." At first, I felt that I was being dishonest but as I acquired more and more corporate work I realized managing it all is indeed a business. Corporate marketing managers and directors also seem to respect the description 'business owner' more than 'freelance writer'. I definitely want to make your mantra my mantra: writing is a craft; freelancing is a business! Thanks for the reminder and advice!

Thanks for the insightful article! I liked how he said he thinks of himself as a small business owner rather than an artist, that's a really great mindset to come into freelancing.
